Delta Works/ Neeltje Jans

The Delta Works were the Netherlands’ response to the Great Flood Disaster. They protected against high water, but also made Zeeland more accessible and created new nature reserves.

On the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953, the Netherlands was hit by the Watersnoodramp. This disaster was caused by a heavy north-westerly storm combined with spring tides. Dykes broke and large parts of Zeeland were flooded. There were many casualties. The Delta Works should prevent such a disaster from happening again in the future. They are the largest defence system in our country against high water from the sea.

Nollebos (Nature reserve South-West Walcheren)

On the southwest side of Walcheren is a beautiful strip of nature. A landscape that combines sea, beach, dunes and forest. This 7km long nature reserve starts at the Nollebos on the west side of the boulevard in Vlissingen and ends with the Zouteland dunes.

The Nollebos is an approximately 26-hectare nature and recreation area. Created around the creek remnants left over after the 1944 dike breaches. The dike breaches were the result of bombing by the Allies during the liberation of Walcheren.

With the forest planted later, it is now a recreational area. Both spontaneously and through adapted management, it has become a very diverse nature reserve over the years.

City Walk

Guided city walk through the old town. Listen to stories about Vlissingen’s past and present, discover where Michiel de Ruyter lived and how high the water rose during the infamous 1953 flood.
See the only tree that survived the storm surge and why are those flats so crooked. During the walk, our guide will show and tell you all about it.
